Windows

Bespoke timber windows crafted with precision, combining traditional joinery techniques and modern design. Bespoke wooden windows that enhance the appearance of a home, give energy efficiency, security and architectural character using British craftsmanship.

Traditional Sliding Sash

  • Retains the charm of period homes
  • Smooth running technology
  • All box sections can be matched identically to a listed property’s original box section
  • Range of traditional hardware in black, brass, brushed aluminium or chrome
  • Finger-jointed to prevent ‘jams and wobbles’ for smooth functioning openers

The vertical sliding sash is the classic English window, popular for over 300 years. It’s practical, space-saving vertical opening made it perfect for houses that opened directly onto the street but became widely adopted to add a touch of grandeur. Precision crafting and advanced timber treatment result in easy operation with no sticking, wobbling or rattling combined now with a modern twist by having a slimline double glazed unit installed.

Casement Sash

  • Stylish and contemporary
  • Finger-joints
  • Steel hardware in a range of colours and designs
  • Manual opening only

Casement is the simpler window with hinged sashes rather than vertical sliding. With less maintenance and easy operation, they may lack the intricate workings of a sliding sash, but they are highly practical and have a very traditional/modern appearance.

Why choose timber windows?

Wooden windows are a wonderful way to maintain the character of your home. Precision-crafted by our highly skilled bench joiners, our range combines traditional design with modern timber treatment to create a strong, secure and energy-efficient window. Sustainably sourced, our range offers either casement or sash with a selection of paint and stain finishes to maintain the unique style of your property. All windows can be manufactured using a slimline double glazed unit to really enhance the thermal rating of your property from single pane glass replacements.

Timber or UPVC?

Timber is a perfect choice for window frames. It's thermally efficient and doesn’t conduct heat or cold. Here at Oak Hill Joinery Ltd, we manufacture our windows with the most precise machining techniques to ensure a very well insulated and completely draught proof window prepared for any weather conditions.

FAQs

Is the type of glass important for the windows?

We supply all of our windows with Pilkington K glass with all cavities filled with argon gas. The “K” effect essentially reflects the heat from the internal pane back into your property to maximise the effect of your home's heating.

Stain or paint finishing

We would never claim timber is maintenance-free, but if you love the look, we offer impressive stain finishes to highlight the beauty of the natural grain. Alternatively, we offer a great range of paint finishes on all of our ranges of timber, providing a more contemporary finish.

Selecting your timber choice

We offer sustainably sourced softwood (European Redwood) and hardwood (African Sapele), both of which are accredited by the Forestry Stewardship Council (FSC). Our timber is all manufactured from ONE solid section of timber, as opposed to many companies providing a much cheaper pre-manufactured process of laminating timbers together. This really does have an impact on the visual qualities once stains or paints are applied.

Colours of stains/paints

We can offer a wide range of colours or stains. Our most preferred method is actually the client deciding their colour from any desired colour swatch, which we can research the RAL code and match the colour exactly through our spray techniques.

Do you provide FENSA certification?

We would like to take this opportunity to explain that due to manufacturing bespoke timber windows usually to replicate existing, we are not FENSA registered and cannot provide a certificate for replacement windows.

What if my property is in a conservation area?

If your property is in a conservation area, windows would be approved when applying for planning permission regardless of design/spec, so this doesn’t cause any issues. Only if replacing windows, which would need to comply with modern building regulations 2002, would this be an issue going forward.

Having said this, we provide detailed sectional drawings of the windows/sashes, which have been sent to Hertfordshire, Bedfordshire, and Buckinghamshire councils and approved in grade 2 listed buildings and properties in conservation areas.

What is a Bespoke Wooden Window?

A bespoke wooden window is a well-crafted, custom-designed window that looks better than standard, mass-produced alternatives. Unlike off-the-shelf options, these windows are precisely tailored to match the specific architectural requirements and preferences of an individual property.

Crafted by skilled joiners with extensive woodworking expertise, bespoke wooden windows are created from carefully selected timber such as oak, cedar or hardwood. Each window is individually measured, designed and constructed to ensure perfect fit, performance and suit a building's character.

The bespoke process involves consultation and design. Homeowners collaborate closely with our craftsmen to determine precise specifications including window style, timber selection, glazing options and architectural compatibility. This approach ensures a window that meets both functional and aesthetic requirements.

Wooden windows offer significant advantages over alternative materials. They provide superior thermal efficiency, natural insulation and remarkable durability. The properties of timber create excellent temperature regulation and sound insulation, while delivering a warm, authentic look that modern materials cannot replicate.

Sustainability is a crucial consideration, with responsibly sourced timber offering an environmentally conscious window solution. Professional manufacturers such as Oakhill Joinery combine traditional woodworking techniques with modern engineering, ensuring each bespoke window represents a high-quality, long-lasting investment in a property's comfort and appearance.

Are timber windows worth the extra cost compared to uPVC?

Timber windows represent an investment for homeowners seeking quality, durability and visual appeal. While initially more expensive than uPVC alternatives, wooden windows offer exceptional long-term value. They provide better thermal efficiency, natural insulation and can significantly enhance a property's character and market value.

When properly maintained, timber windows can last decades, outperforming synthetic materials. They can be easily repaired, repainted and restored, unlike plastic windows which often require complete replacement. Their natural ability to regulate temperature and reduce external noise makes them an environmentally friendly and practical choice.

For heritage properties and those seeking authentic architectural character, timber windows remain unmatched.
